Nowadays there are quite a few types of ebook readers out there in the market. The devices have come a long way since the days where you could only read ebooks from your PDAs and PCs. The popular ebook readers nowadays are of course the iPad and Kindle but there are now similar gadgets available from the growing list of manufacturers particularly in Asia.
There are obviously pros and cons of each of the devices and for the sake of simplicity, we would just talk about iPad and Kindle. After all the rest of the devices are not up the mark just yet but in due time they will.
The iPad has its ibooks application which offers a lot of the missing functionalities of the current ebook readers. The obvious advantages of the application are the ability to flip pages using the touch screen, able to read 2 pages on the same screen and the ease to navigate through the ebook. I especially like the 2 page feature where when launched in landscape mode, it makes you feel like reading a book rather than a document. You can browse through the table of contents of the ebook and still go back to where you were reading easily.
In addition, it provides a colorful display for pictures, photos, illustrations and book covers. With this device you have access to libraries of iPad ebooks plus you can download and read ebooks from several sources including full page views of popular comics. The wooden bookshelf design of the ibooks application is also a hit among the consumers as it provides a sense of familiarity with the physical bookshelves back home.
Although the Kindle offers similar size display but it could not match the iPad in terms of the features and functionalities. The iPad absolutely blows away the competition with all its advance features mentioned above plus the integration with iTunes audio and video as well as access to thousands of iPhone applications online. However Kindle does offer a distinctive advantage over its rival where its flat matte screen is considered to be less stressful to the eyes when reading ebooks over long period. iPad’s display is brightly back lit and the reflective glass are considered to be a problem to the eyes over long period.
However with iPad you could easily read in dim or dark places as compared to its rival. So the conclusion is that I would definitely recommend iPad as the ultimate ebook reader although it is slightly more expensive than its rival but you do get a lot more out of it.
